The Government is investing a record £5.2 billion in flood and coastal defences over the next six years to better protect 336,000 properties. Today, the government has published its Investment Plan, which sets out what we will achieve from this investment, how they will develop the portfolio of projects to improve the country’s flood and coastal defences, and how they will manage the investment and track its progress. Around 1,000 schemes across England will receive investment in the first year of the programme.
One of the schemes in Rother Valley is Eel Mires Dike Flood Alleviation Scheme. It is set out that £550,000 funding will help put defences into Laughton Common to protect homes.
As the residents in Laughton Common will know, I have been pushing for a response from Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council since the floods they experienced in December 2019. I am still concerned that RMBC have taken so long to get together preparations to alleviate the flooding in this area, and still need to push to tackle areas such a Whiston that are experiencing the same levels of flooding.
