- In a speech in the House of Commons today, local Rother Valley MP Alexander Stafford highlighted the need to strengthen the bond between the UK and the Commonwealth
Speaking in the House of Commons today, Rother Valley MP Alexander Stafford shone a light on the UK neglect of the Commonwealth over the last 40 years, calling on the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) to strengthen the ties between the UK and Commonwealth nations with whom we share 'values, legal system, Governance and traditions.'
As well as those shared histories, Alexander, a fervent Brexiteer and keen backer of the Commonwealth, noted how the nations within it have stood by the UK in times of war and difficulty for centuries.
Comparing the Commonwealth with the European Union, Alexander made reference to the fact that each nation within the Commonwealth has an equal stake in it's future, regardless of size or wealth, and celebrates those nations who are keen to enjoy the benefits offered by being in the Commonwealth and welcoming new countries in the future.
